The Liebster Award

(Okay, I was suppose to post this yesterday but thanks to crummy internet service, it's being posted now.)

Wendell of Dell on Movies has given me this award, and I thank him for that. Right, let's get this over with.

The rules are as followed:

1. Answer the 11 questions given by the person who nominated you.
2. Nominate other bloggers (up to 11) and give them 11 questions to answer.

(There's also a rule to tell the readers eleven things about yourself but I'm skipping that one for now.)

1. Name an actor or actress whose films you will always see, no matter what. Tell us why? Usually it depends on which actor I'm mildly obsessing over at the moment. (More often than not, this applies to actors from the British Isles and TV shows come into play more.) But overall, I suppose this applies to the recently departed Philip Seymour Hoffman. He easily stole every scene he was in.

2. Name an actor or actress whose films you try not to see, no matter what. Tell us why? James Franco. He was good in Milk but overall, I try to avoid his incredibly punchable face.

3. What movie would you like to see get a sequel that never got one? Galaxy Quest. Not sure if it would work as well without Alan Rickman...

4. Where is your ideal seat in a movie theater? Somewhere in the back row, an aisle seat preferably.

5. Other than in a theater, how do you watch most movies? (Redbox, Netflix, online, Blu-Rays/DVDs you own, etc.) Depends. Sometimes Netflix, sometimes movies I borrow from the local library. But most of the time it's stuff I have on my DVR.

6. Name a movie you love from a genre you hate. Well, it's more along the lines of "genre I don’t regularly watch", but Rio Bravo.

7. Name a movie you hate from a genre you love. Friggin' Crash, man. AMPAS has to do a hell of a lot to make up for that.

8. What classic era director (1960s or earlier) would've made a great superhero movie? Why? Maybe it wouldn't be a great movie but with Buster Keaton at the helm, it would certainly be daring as all hell. Have you seen the stunts he did for his films? They could've killed him easily had he not taken the necessary precautions. Just imagine if he had someone else doing those stunts.

9. What currently working director would've made a great classic era noir? Why? Todd Haynes. If Far from Heaven and Carol are anything to go by (as well as the HBO mini-series adaptation of Mildred Pierce), the man knows how to capture an era that has long since passed.

10. What famous person would you like to see get a biopic that hasn't had one? I know he only passed away a few years ago but a biopic of Peter O'Toole would be gold. (Also it would be an almost cruel irony if whomever played him got an Oscar for their work.)

11. You're going to spend the rest of your life all alone on a deserted island. You're allowed to bring only three movies with you. What are they and why? Singin' in the Rain (because it's an absolute delight), On the Waterfront (because the acting's great in it), and The Godfather Part II (just for something to pass a lot of time).

1. Which is your favorite film of the 1970s? I have to choose just one? Ugh, fine. Um...probably Apocalypse Now Redux.

2. Which is your favorite adaptation of a novel? Again, just one? All right, all right. Recently Maurice holds that honor. (The book's definitely worth a look too.)

3. Which is your favorite Western? Rio Bravo, without a doubt.

5. Which is the first film you have seen in a theater? Not sure precisely, but I think I remember seeing Monsters, Inc. when it was in theaters.

6. Which are the five DVDs/Blu-rays in your personal movie collection which you will never give to anyone? Oh, that's easy. My Criterion copies of Sweet Smell of Success, Bigger Than Life, The Night of the Hunter, Shallow Grave and Ace in the Hole.

7. Which is your favorite animation film? I don't usually watch them, but WALL-E has a place in my heart.

8. Which movie star you'd love to go on a dinner with? Tom Hiddleston, hands down.

9. Which is your favorite movie soundtrack? Either The Fountain or A Single Man.

10. Which is a film that you will recommend that you think not many have seen? Oh Lord, there are a lot of movies that I'll recommend to people that are severely underrated. But to choose just one, probably Local Hero.

A Handful of Awards

Well, this year's almost over, so what better way to (sort of) cap off the year than with a few blog awards? (My movie tally will be up later today.) Anyway, Michael gave me not one but two blog awards. And they couldn't be anymore different.

First up is the Blog of the Year Award. First off, I'm flattered. Secondly, the rules go:

Most Controversial Piece It's a toss-up. It's either my perspective on performances and the Academy Awards or how Hollywood is a male-dominated business. Either way, they both managed to caused a stink.

Most Surprisingly Successful Piece No contest. That goes to my list of Oscar-less actors. (Too bad its follow-up didn't get as much love.)

Most Underrated Piece Well, this was something I did in the early stages of this blog (when it was still called 'Life of a Cinephile and Bibliophile').

Most Pride-Worthy Piece I feel that my piece on fellow bloggers and who they love get this honor. (Hey, you'd be amazed at what one learns on Twitter.)

The Stylish Blogger Award

I was tagged by A Mythical Monkey writes about the movies for this award. (EDIT: I was also tagged by the diary of a film awards fanatic and Forever Classics after publishing this post.) Need to name seven facts about myself (deja vu). So here are seven facts.

1. Although I'm a woman, I hate wearing anything feminine. Pink, dresses, skirts: hate them. I'm fine with jewelry however, but only my class ring and a simple necklace.
2. I'll continue that comment of hating all things feminine by adding I don't like cosmetics. I wore mascara for a while once, but when I took it off I looked like I was mugged.
3. I have taken numerous stabs at writing stories and scripts, but I always hit this one roadblock: I never know how to end them.
4. For literature, I prefer plays over books most of the time. Basically because I like dialogue over description when it comes to literature, In Cold Blood aside.
5. I always try to find performances that'll leave me speechless. I've seen a few (Marlon in On the Waterfront, Monty in Judgment at Nuremberg), but I'm still trying to find one that'll have me struck dumb.
6. That being said, I'm also trying to find female performances that stick with me. Again, I've seen a few (Liz in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Audrey in Wait Until Dark), but I haven't seen "the one".
7. I'm a little infamous for being really picky with my movie choices, but I'd be willing to give a movie a chance. That is, if I heard good things about it.

Happy 101 Award

Okay, so Dan over at Top10Films tagged me with the Happy 101 Award. Basically I gotta name ten things that make me happy and tag ten other bloggers. The good thing is it doesn't have to be all movie-related (about time!). Okay, ten things:

1) Movies. Duh...

2) Books. Again, duh...

3) Comments. That's usually my way of finding out if someone's actually reading what I write.

4) My cat Merlin. He's a handful (and a nut) but I still love the goober.

5) Funny posts. Particularly those by Univarn (who I'm tagging).

6) Black and white movies. A little more specific than the first one I mentioned. I believe black and white films have a more romantic feel to it.

7) Hilarious movies references. More specifically from these two sites.

8) Lists. Usually the choices mentioned on them are pretty interesting. A cool site to check out if you're interested.

9) Music. It's weird because I listen to rock music to calm me down if I'm in a bad mood.

10) Having conversations with other bloggers. I don't usually reply to the comments, but I talk to a lot of other bloggers on Twitter. My account, if you're curious.

Um, wow. That was unexpected. Univarn tagged me with a new meme floating around (I honestly wonder where these things start). Anyway, here's what I gotta do:

Didn't I do this already? Anyway, seven facts about me:

1. In my house, I'm usually the reference book for all things movies. Although I should probably take it as a honor, I find it kinda annoying.
2. The most amount of movies I can watch in a day is two. Not a lot, yes, but that's my limit.
3. Books, on the other hand, are different. The most I've read at once was three.
4. I like that my family gives me film books, but my peeve is that they're always out of date within a year of publication.
5. Books or plays, you ask? I've taken a better liking to plays.
6. Along with movies and books, I also like music. I've been listening to my iPod a lot more since reading (and watching) High Fidelity.
7. I LOVE going to New York City. It's like a new experience every time I go there.

What the-? 15?!! Oy, fine.

First there was The Dark of the Matinee's post, then Univarn's. What am I referring to, you may ask? They've been nominated for the Kreativ Blogger Award! And, thanks to Univarn, so have I! Wow, a blogger for five months and I'm up for an award. Univarn said about me:

Ever read a blog that reminds you of the days when you first fell in love with movies? MovieNut14's blog wonderfully captures that sense of community involvement, curiosity for all that encompasses film, and yet an intelligence for what makes a good movie well beyond their (or even my) years.

4) Seven things, huh? Um, let's see:

~ As you could figure from the title of the blog, I am an avid movie watcher and reader.

~ I'm stuck living in the same house with a nutty Vassar freshman and an Albany Academy freshman who's obssessed with fishing and the Boston Red Sox. Or, to be more specific, my sister and brother.

~ I'm trying to expand my horizons as a movie watcher, particularly with works from great directors. I did see a number of works from classic directors last year, such as Hitchcock, Wilder, Kazan, Fellini, Bergman, Truffant, Coppola, Scorsese, Lumet, Kubrick...okay, y'know what? This just seems a lot easier.

~ Directors I'm a fan of? Tim Burton and Billy Wilder.

~ As for authors? I've taken a liking to Tennessee Williams and Stephen King.

~ I'm smart enough to veer away from P.O.C (pile of crap) movies, thanks in part to the blogging community and my own common sense.

~ Main reason for why I started this blog? Had nothing better to do. Oh, and also to voice my opinion.
