Question

Exactly one year ago today, I saw a film that completely changed the way I saw films. The film in question? Steve McQueen's Shame. It very much opened my eyes to other films that were just as raw and unflinching. (For some strange reason though, I haven't seen it since that day.)

Anyway, my question to you, dear readers, is this: is there that one film you contribute to the way you watch movies?

  1. Not one, but many:

    The New World
    Three Colors: Blue
    Play Time
    Koyaanisqatsi

    1. And I've only seen The New World. Should probably see the other ones soon.

  2. It always seems like the strangest answer, but it's the most honest answer I have:

    DEAD MAN WALKING

It was the first film to really shake me up in a theatre, the first film to make me cry, and the first film that took my brain outside of what was happening on screen. It got me thinking about death, loss, forgiveness, justice, and mercy. I might have thought about that from time to time after films I'd seen before that fateful afternoon...but never in such a flood like I did during DEAD MAN WALKING.

What was it about SHAME (great film BTW) that changed your outlook?

    1. I don't think that's a strange answer at all. I thought Dead Man Walking was a very effective film as well.

I think what made Shame leave such an impact on me was the fact that its director wasn't concerned about any kind of controversy that would follow. It also made me realize that any film that was bold for its time is bound to be something I call a favorite.

  3. Let the Right One in. I loved how even though its a vampire movie, it had a realistic look and feel to it.

  4. Ah, I LOVE that Shame had such an impact on you. What a film that is.

Three films have literally changed how I live my life:

    Traffic
    Antwone Fisher
    Blood of the Beasts

Works of art that will live with me forever.

    1. Like I said, I admire bold films.

Traffic is the only film you've mentioned that I've seen. Should probably see those other two as well.

    2. My love for Antwone FIsher is way too personal... most people just think it's decent. Either way, it changed me. Be curious to hear your thoughts about it.
