Ha, I think it's rather obvious what I often recommend. Granted, I try to curb my Kurosawa recommendations based on the taste of the people I'm talking too.
Holiday (1938) with Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn. Bittersweet romantic comedy, and the best bet for people who otherwise can't stand Katharine Hepburn.
I think I recommend according to what I know of the person's taste. I do recommend Silence of the Lambs a lot...not that many people have seen it, and their idea of horror films is heinous.
Working at a DVD store, I recommend the best new movies. I've been particularly recommending The Town, Buried and The Ghost Writer lately. But I usually don't recommend movies, coz I'm afraid of what people may think of me for liking them ;)
Recently, The Ghost Writer and Catfish but of top movies I can watch over and over it would be LA Confidential, The Negotiator, Bringing Up Baby, Rebecca and Moulin Rouge.
Gone with the Wind (it surprises me that so many people haven't seen it). Since last year, it's Inception and Black Swan. Funny enough, but the first one was not seen by many, although it also was a blockbuster in my country. I would recommend a lot of films I love, like mentioned by Brittani American Beauty, but I'm sure that many people wouldn't understand it and would say it's a bore.
