Why I'm Still Alive

*TRIGGER WARNING: SUICIDE*

I know I don't talk about myself very often online but this is something that I've been wanting to get off my chest for a while now. More after the jump.

Let's Talk

The Kid in the Front Row has recently been conducting several interviews with fellow film bloggers. Though I requested for one, he seemed very eager to ask me questions.

The Kid: You changed the name of your blog a few years back - what made you change?

Anna: Oh, that's easy. The original name, Life of a Cinephile and Bibliophile, was way too much of a mouthful and I figured I wasn't the only one getting sick of typing it. I wanted something catchier and, most importantly, shorter. I came up with Defiant Success, which has a double meaning now that I think of it. I originally chose that title as a combination of The Defiant Ones and Sweet Smell of Success, two films I saw in 2010 that I was very much impressed by (the latter title currently resting among my top 5). Now it's more of a reference towards my blogging fame. I'm grateful for my status in the blogging world, but I want more.

K: You write about such a wide variety of films -- do you write about films you've watched, or do you watch films because you want to write about them?

A: The former, though at times the latter. I've seen a number of opinions on a number of films, many of them I agree on. At times I find details within the films that a scant number of people have pointed out, usually involving the actors. You know, lighting, actors' expressions and gestures, things like that. I tend to keep my eye on the small details. (It's a peculiar habit of mine.)

K: You've taken part in lots of blogathons -- what do you enjoy about doing them?

A: It's frequently my way of both showing my work to other people and exploring the work of prolific names I probably never would've watched under regular circumstances. Like when the Large Association of Movie Blogs (LAMB) have their monthly posts focusing on actors and directors, I try to watch at least one or two films the subject has done. (Most of the time I'd already seen a few of their projects.) It's with these blogathons that I discovered many of the actors and directors I admire today.

K: What can you tell us about your life away from blogging?

A: It's not very interesting, I'm afraid. I'm very much a loner and I'd rather write or read instead of chit chat with my peers face to face. Plus side of being a loner is that I can watch my films in peace and not deal with someone constantly going, "What's going on? Who's that actor? Why does she look familiar?" (It's not bad if they talk afterwards but talk to me when I'm watching a film, I will break out the duct tape. I'm not afraid to use it either.)

K: What would you say is your main reason for blogging?

A: I only started blogging because I got bored one summer day in 2009. Then I got a little more into blogging once I made ties with other bloggers. Then a year passed. Then two years and now nearly three years later, here I am. To sum things up, it's my way to curb my boredom. Well, that and because my social life is -- oh, what's the word I'm looking for? -- nonexistent.

K: You seem to blog pretty much every day! How do you keep it fresh and enjoyable?

A: Simple: change up what you post. Review a highly regarded classic one day and then an underrated recent release the next. And when writing reviews starts to get a little dry, write up a clever list. Rank the work of a prestigious name in the business. Confess which praised films you constantly regret having not seen. You can get a lot of inspiration from other blogs. (Usually for me, I sketch out an idea for a list days if not at least a week in advance. Again, peculiar habit of mine.)

K: Do you think you view films differently now to when you first started blogging?

A: Absolutely. When I started the blog, many of my posts were as bare-boned as possible. You know, stuff everyone and their moms knew. Now my posts go into greater (and sometimes grander) detail. My movie watching was also affected. I had only seen a few classics, the oldest movies I would watch were from the mid 1970s max. Now I'm watching films ranging from present day to the 1920s. It's also thanks to starting the blog I view films as more than just a form of entertainment. It's just really interesting to see the evolution of film.

Why I Like the Classics

As you might have noticed, I have taken more of an interest to classic film than recent movies. I have a good explanation for that.

So many remakes are in production/being released, so I'm curious on what the originals are like. Safe to say I prefer the originals.

Today's movies also seems so trite, you have to go back a few decades to find something new. Believe me, all of today's action movies and romantic comedies have the same overused formula.

Another reason is the actors from that time. They weren't cast in a movie for their build or appearance; they were cast to act, unfortunately a factor of casting not used enough today. Don't get me wrong. There are great actors working today. It's just the best actors and actresses that graced the silver screen were from the Golden Age.

Now mind you, I'm not berating today's movies. Again, I like the classics more.

Ask me!

Stealing this idea from Mad. Since I have nothing else to write (and desperate for an idea), I decided to have a Q&A with my readers. Ask me a question and I'll answer.

"What's been the best thing about writing a movie blog so far?" (asked by Mad Hatter)
Getting to meet other devoted fans of film through comments.

"What film are you still amazed got any positive reviews years after it first annoyed us?" (asked by nixskits)
I got a good response to that: Avatar.

"Why do you usually ignore comments? :)" (asked by Lesya)
I usually don't have anything to add to another comment. Besides, I'm answering your comment now, aren't I?

"What movie you haven't seen yet that you are dying to watch?" (asked by Castor)
It changes from time to time, but recently, Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?.

"Which director would you want to direct your script?" (asked by Anna)
Sam Mendes comes to mind for the one I'm currently working on.

So what are my plans for 2011? They include:

  2. See The Tree of Life.
  3. GRADUATE!!!
  4. Catch up on reading.
Overall, that's really it. What about you?

Grr.

Remember a few months when I was being a whiny bitch? For those who haven't read that post, I'll give an overview. I was complaining that there are a crapload of good movies that I want to see, but the "parental units" are saying I have to wait until I'm old enough to see them since those movies are rated R.

My response? BULLSHIT! (I don't say that to their faces if you're wondering) There's no effin' way I'm waiting unitl September (that's when I was born) to see R-rated movies. I mean, I'm grateful they let me watch some where it's pretty obvious why the movie's rated R (The Godfather, The Shining, Rosemary's Baby, etc.), but COME ON. Break some more rules, please.

Since that earlier post, I managed to see a good solid chunk of excellent R-rated movies (Raging Bull, Schindler's List, Brokeback Mountain, to name a few). But this is without their knowledge. It ain't easy, trust me.

You're probably wondering, "Oh, why can't you watch them with your parents?" The answer is simple: I prefer watching them alone. Basically if I watch something with my mom, afterwards she asks me questions nonstop about the actors or director (which I cannot STAND). And my dad is usually too tired to watch anything after work.

My point is I'm so not waiting three months to be allowed to see R-rated movies without their permission.

Writer's Block: I haz it

Apologies for the lack of posts in the past couple of days. It's just...I'm not feeling motivated enough to write something. I mean, yes, I'm watching movies and reviewing them. But apart from that, I've been feeling rather...bleah over the last few days.

One reason might be is because I'm finishing up my junior year of high school. I have finished my exams, and I have a bunch of free time now. I honestly don't know why I'm not up to writing anything.

10 Movie Facts About Me

I don't know whether to thank or curse Univarn for mentioning me. But either way, I knew this would happen. It's going to be hard to think of some good ones, believe me.

1) If you couldn't guess the meaning of my username (MovieNut14), it's actually rather simple. I became interested in movies at the age of 14.

2) Movie I'm ashamed to admit I haven't seen? Schindler's List.

3) I almost never re-watch a movie. My memory is that good.

4) Movie I thank for getting me interested in film? On the Waterfront.

5) Some people get songs stuck in their heads, I get scenes from movies stuck in mine. If I like the scene, it gets stuck in my head and never gets out. For example, the New Year's scene from The Godfather Part II.

6) As well as scenes, I get movie lines stuck in my head. Such as "Well, nobody's perfect" from Some Like It Hot and "We all go a little mad sometimes" from Psycho. Believe me, it's annoying.

7) I never cry at a movie. The farthest I got to getting emotional from a movie was tearing up big time at the end of Chaplin.

8) I don't have a specific genre of movie that I like. I kind of like drama, but overall I'm seeing different types of movies to determine which genre I like.

9) Before starting up the blog, I had (and still do) memberships on two review sites called Everyone's a Critic and EverHYPE (my membership for the latter will be gone once I get all of my reviews from there onto the blog).

10) The first movie I reviewed for the blog was 12 Angry Men.

Hmm, who to nominated... Oh, I know! Danny and Julian Stark, I'd love to see movie facts about you two.

My Life in Film

A week ago, Andrew did a small post on a game he made up. The only requirement is the answers have to be movie titles.

Gender: Working Girl
Describe Yourself: Rebel Without a Cause
How Do You Feel Right Now: Dazed and Confused
Where Do You Live: On the Waterfront
What's the Weather Like There: Sunshine
Where Would You Like To Go Right Now: Sleepless in Seattle
What's Your Biggest Fear: Crimes and Misdemeanors
Your Life Is A Film, Give It A Name: As Good As It Gets
What Will You Be Doing Today: Dirty Dancing
Give Us A Piece Of Advice: It Happened One Night

That was actually harder than I thought it would be.

MOVIE WATCHING UPDATE

If you're a regular reader of this blog, you may recall less than two weeks ago I compiled a list of movies I want to see before 2009 is over. Well, here's an update:

It's a Wonderful Life
Vertigo
Cast Away
Catch Me if You Can
Heat
Cool Hand Luke
Million Dollar Baby

8 1/2
Sherlock Holmes

UPDATE: Found out that The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus is going into wide release in January, so scratch that one off.

UPDATE #2: I don't really wan't to see Nine that badly, so that can be one movie for the start of 2010. Scratch that one off!

Saturday, December 12, 2009

Man, oh man, oh man.

I'm planning to see a number of movies before this year comes to an end. Those movies are:

It's a Wonderful Life
Vertigo
Cast Away
Catch Me if You Can
Heat
Cool Hand Luke
Million Dollar Baby
8 1/2

This should be interesting since I only own three of those movies, and I only watch movies when I don't have school the next day (ie weekends, days off). Thank God for the library. And in theaters, I plan to see:

Sherlock Holmes
Nine
The Imginarium of Doctor Parnassus

This is going to be a hell of a month.

Tuesday, December 1, 2009

It sucks.

Having turned 16 less than three months ago, I'm annoyed at the fact that my parents are still being picky on what R-rated movies I can and can't watch by myself. It's weird because I'm allowed to watch the entire Godfather trilogy (which I did watch earlier this year), but I can't watch Goodfellas? It's even more stupid because I know why the movie's rated R (i.e., Bonnie and Clyde, Schindler's List) and they're like, "No, wait 'till you're older." Sheesh, cry me a river.

Friday, October 23, 2009

Ugh.

I've been under the weather for some time now, and I'm getting sick of being sick. My throat's killing me, I have a really dry cough, and it feels like my brain is leaking out of my nose.

I've been spending most of my time on the Internet. And this is one of most interesting pages I've found since being quarantined to my room. It was mentioned on /Film when I found the link. It's a petition to have Sam Rockwell's performance in Moon (a movie I've yet to see) nominated for an Oscar. So if you saw Moon and want Rockwell's performance nominated, just go to the first link and sign your name.

Also yesterday I saw The Hustler (which I'll be reviewing soon).

Thursday, October 22, 2009

I have a confession.

Old movies depress me.

I have a reason. It's not usually the content of the movie (though The Grapes of Wrath had me thinking a lot) but more of the actors of the movie. Take for example Rebel Without a Cause. The three main actors (James Dean, Sal Mineo, Natalie Wood) all died at a young age. Dean died in a car crash at 24 in 1955, Mineo was stabbed at 37 in 1976, and Wood drowned at 43 in 1981.

My point is a movie made between the 1930's and the 1960's usually make me feel depressed, mainly because a majority of the cast is dead now. And you'll never see their talent ever again.

Monday, August 31, 2009

So many books and movies, so little time.

*sigh* It's that time of year again: back to school. I will be a junior at Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake High School on September 9, 2009.

I planned at the beginning of the summer to catch up on my movie-watching and reading, which I did, but I feel like I haven't done enough. I saw 32 movies (17 in June, 10 in July, 5 in August) and read only 8 books. It's definitely a sign that says I need to read more and watch movies less. But there are so many hours in a day, I can't cram that much into one day.

Has this happened to you before? Trying to cram so much into one vacation?

Saturday, August 1, 2009

Hello!

Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Anna, and I'm 15 (16 in September). I live in upstate New York. I have a younger sibling who'll be starting high school next month and an older one who'll be starting college next month as well.

As you can tell by the title of the blog, I am a fan of movies and books. Currently, my favorite movies are The Dark Knight, WALL-E, The Godfather (parts I and II), The 400 Blows, among others. My favorite books are The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes, The Reader by Bernhard Schlink and The Shining by Stephen King.

In this blog, I will be reviewing films I've seen and books I've read, and see if they're worth recommending.
